چکیده

We study pattern selection of cracks in directionally drying fractures by analyzing the experimental systems recently devised by C. Allain and L. Limat. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 2981 (1995).] Proposing a simple picture of crack formation, we clarify the mechanism of how cracks array regularly and find that the interval between neighboring cracks is proportional to the 2/3 power of the cell thickness. This result explains well the experimental data of Allain and Limat. 46.30.Nz 62.20.Mk 47.54.+r Typeset using REVTEX Present address: Department of Physics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1110 West Green Street, Urbana, IL, 61801, USA

Memory effect on the formation of drying cracks.

We propose a model for the formation of drying cracks in a viscoplastic material. In this model, we observe that when an external force is applied to a viscoplastic material before drying, the material memorizes the effect of the force as a plastic deformation. The formation of the drying cracks is influenced by this plastic deformation. This outcome clarifies the result of recent experiments w...

Flow and fracture in drying nanoparticle suspensions.

Drying aqueous suspensions of monodisperse silica nanoparticles can fracture in remarkable patterns. As the material solidifies, evenly spaced cracks invade from the drying surface, with individual cracks undergoing intermittent motion. We show that the growth of cracks is limited by the advancement of the compaction front, which is governed by a balance of evaporation and flow of fluid at the ...

Fracture in electrophoretically deposited CdSe nanocrystal films

We have studied the fracture, strain, and stress of electrophoretically deposited EPD films of CdSe nanocrystals as a function of the film thickness, nanocrystal size, and drying method. Fracture results from the film stress that develops with the loss of residual solvent after EPD when the film exceeds a threshold thickness that increases with nanocrystal core diameter from 300 to 1200 nm for ...

Crack Path Selection in Adhesively Bonded Joints: the Roles of External Loads and Specimen Geometry

This paper investigates the roles of external loads and specimen geometry on crack path selection in adhesively bonded joints. First, the effect of mixed mode fracture on crack path selection is studied. Using epoxy as an adhesive and aluminum as the adherends, double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens with various T-stress levels are prepared and tested under mixed mode fracture loading. Post-fai...

Spiral cracks without twisting

A fascinating class of patterns, often encountered in nature as wiggling cracks on rocks, dried out fields and tectonic plates, is produced by the fracture of solids 1. Here we report the observation and modeling of an unusual type of patterns consisting of spiral cracks within fragments of a thin layer of drying precipitate. We find that this symmetry-breaking cracking mode arises naturally no...
